La Tour Eiffel

La Tour Eiffel, construite pour l�Exposition Universelle de Paris de 1889, est depuis longtemps devenue le symbole non seulement de la capitale, mais aussi, peut-être, de la France entière. De la hauteur de la tour d�une longueur de 307 mètres on peut profiter des vues magnifiques de Paris. À pied, ayant surmonté 350 ou 700 marches, on peut monter la première (57 m) ou la deuxième plate-forme (115 m), il est donc raisonnable de préférer les ascenseurs. De la deuxième à la troisième plate-forme, à la hauteur de 247 mètres, c�est un ascenseur unique qui monte. Au pied de la Tour Eiffel il y a le Champ-de-Mars, qui a été autrefois utilisé pour des exercices et des défilés militaires. C�est sur le Champ-de-Mars qu�en 14 juillet 1790 on a prêté le serment solennel de la première constitution française. Aujourd�hui c�est un parc calme, qui est idéal pour des promenades tranquilles.

L�hôtel des Invalides

Dans les environs de Champs-de-Mars il y a l�hôtel des Invalides (XVIIème siècle, il abrite maintenant un musée militaire) et l�église avec le tombeau de Napoléon, la belle cathédrale des Invalides, construite dans le style de la classique française (1675-1706), � ainsi que l�École Militaire (1759-1782). Les Champs-Elysées sont depuis longtemps devenus un autre symbole de Paris. �La plus belle avenue du monde� - ce n�est pas seulement une rue de boutiques et de divertissements, où une boutique luxueuse est remplacée par une autre. Une partie des Champs Elysées, menant à la Place de la Concorde, est entourée de squares verts, qui abritent des musées, des théâtres et des restaurants.

L�Arc de Triomphe

Dans la direction opposée les Champs-Elysées se terminent près de l�Arc de Triomphe, dont la construction a été commencée en 1806 par l�ordre de Napoléon en l�honneur de l�armée française victorieuse. Napoléon n�a pas réussi à voir le travail terminé (1836). En 1920, au pied de l�arc on a posé la Tombe du Soldat inconnu. Tout ce complexe est de 50 m de hauteur et de 45 mètres de largeur. De l�extérieur l�arc est décorée de sculptures monumentales et de frises, qui affichent les performances, les victoires et le retour triomphal de l�armée. À l�intérieur, les noms des généraux et des batailles sont énumérés. La terrasse d�observation offre une vue magnifique sur la ville. Par ailleurs, il est interdit aux piétons de traverser par le sol la Place de l�Étoile animée, au centre de laquelle se dresse l�Arc de Triomphe. En plus des curiosités historiques, Paris est aussi célèbre pour son stade de football Stade de Paris, spécialement construit pour la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA 1998 et devenant le lieu où la France a gagné son titre de Champion. Cependant, ce n�est pas seulement le football qui joue un rôle important dans la vie de cette ville, le célèbre Marathon de Paris, que l�on organise chaque année en avril, attire à Paris de nombreux sportifs et amateurs de sports. Le moyen le plus commode pour se déplacer dans la ville et ses environs est le métro célèbre de Paris, l�un des plus anciens sur le continent, grâce à son réseau très branché on peut regagner rapidement absolument partout dans Paris ou sa banlieue.

Le Louvre

Aussi, un des symboles parisiens est, certes, le Louvre célèbre, le palais ancien royal, où dès 1793 s�est installé le musée connu dans le monde entier. Le Louvre a acquis la gloire universelle non seulement grâce aux grandes oeuvres artistiques exposées là, parmi qui il y a "La Joconde" et �la Vénus de Milo�. Le Louvre dispose de la collection la plus riche des toiles et des sculptures présentants des époques différentes jusqu�au XIX siècle : l�art oriental, grec et romain, la sculpture etc. La collection égyptienne fait la partie considérable de l�exposition du musée, ainsi que les tableaux des peintres français des XIV-XIX siècles, des peintres italiens et flamands. Pour visiter lu Louvre il faut d�un à deux jours, autrement vous risquez de voir seulement la partie la plus insignifiante de son exposition. Le Louvre est non seulement le musée, mais aussi un beau bâtiment historique étant la partie du patrimoine culturel français.

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837 and today is the administrative headquarters of the Monarch. Although in use for the many official events and receptions held by The Queen, the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors every year. For visitor information, please visit the Royal Collection website.

Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms. These include 19 State rooms, 52 Royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices and 78 bathrooms. In measurements, the building is 108 metres long across the front, 120 metres deep (including the central quadrangle) and 24 metres high. The Palace is very much a working building and the centrepiece of Britain's constitutional monarchy. It houses the offices of those who support the day-to-day activities and duties of The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh and their immediate family.

The Palace is also the venue for great Royal ceremonies, State Visits and Investitures, all of which are organised by the Royal Household. Although Buckingham Palace is furnished and decorated with priceless works of art that form part of the Royal Collection, one of the major art collections in the world today. It is not an art gallery and nor is it a museum. Its State Rooms form the nucleus of the working Palace and are used regularly by The Queen and members of the Royal Family for official and State entertaining.

More than 50,000 people visit the Palace each year as guests to banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and the Royal Garden Parties. For those who do receive an invitation to Buckingham Palace, the first step across the threshold is into the Grand Hall and up the curving marble stairs of the Grand Staircase. Portraits are still set in the walls, as they were by Queen Victoria.

The Throne Room, sometimes used during Queen Victoria's reign for Court gatherings and as a second dancing room, is dominated by a proscenium arch supported by a pair of winged figures of 'victory' holding garlands above the 'chairs of state'. It is in the Throne Room that The Queen, on very special occasions like Jubilees, receives loyal addresses. Another use of the Throne Room has been for formal wedding photographs.

George IV's original palace lacked a large room in which to entertain. Queen Victoria rectified that shortcoming by adding in 1853-5 what was, at the time of its construction, the largest room in London. At 36.6m long, 18m wide and 13.5m high, the Ballroom is the largest multi-purpose room in Buckingham Palace. It was opened in 1856 with a ball to celebrate the end of the Crimean War. It is along the East Gallery that The Queen and her State guests process to the Ballroom for the State Banquet normally held on the first day of the visit. Around 150 guests are invited and include members of the Royal Family, the government and other political leaders, High Commissioners and Ambassadors and prominent people who have trade or other associations with the visiting country.

Today, it is used by The Queen for State banquets and other formal occasions such as the annual Diplomatic Reception attended by 1,500 guests. This is a very formal occasion during which The Queen will meet every head of mission accredited to the Court of St James's. For the diplomats it is perhaps the highlight of the annual diplomatic social calendar. The Ballroom has been used variously as a concert hall for memorial concerts and performances of the arts and it is the regular venue for Investitures of which there are usually 21 a year - nine in spring, two in the summer and ten in the autumn. At Investitures, The Queen (or The Prince of Wales as Her Majesty's representative) will meet recipients of British honours and give them their awards, including knighting those who have been awarded knighthoods.

From the Ballroom, the West Gallery, with its four Gobelin tapestries, leads into the first of the great rooms that overlook lawn and the formal gardens - setting for the annual Garden Parties introduced by Queen Victoria in 1868. The State Dining Room is one of the principal State Rooms on the West side of the Palace. Many distinguished people have dined in this room including the 24 holders of the Order of Merit as well as presidents and prime ministers. Before the Ballroom was added to the Palace in the 1850s, the first State Ball was held in the Blue Drawing Room in May 1838 as part of the celebrations leading up to Queen Victoria's Coronation. The Music Room was originally known as the Bow Drawing Room and is the centre of the suite of rooms on the Garden Front between the Blue and the White Drawing Rooms.
Four Royal babies - The Prince of Wales, The Princess Royal, The Duke of York and Prince William - were all christened by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Music Room. One of its more formal uses is during a State Visit when guests are presented to The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and the visiting Head of State or for receptions. The last of the suite of rooms overlooking the gardens on the principal floor is the White Drawing Room. Originally called the North Drawing Room, it is perhaps the grandest of all the State Rooms. The Room also serves as a Royal reception room for The Queen and members of the Royal Family to gather before State and official occasions. The Bow Room is familiar to the many thousands of guests to Royal Garden Parties who pass through it on their way to the garden. It was originally intended as a part of George IV's private apartments - to be the King's Library - but it was never fitted up as such.

Instead, it has become another room for entertaining and is where The Queen holds the arrival lunch for a visiting Head of State at the start of a State visit.

Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey is a Gothic monastery church in London that is the traditional place of coronation and burial for English monarchs. Neither a cathedral nor a parish church, Westminster Abbey is a place of worship owned by the royal family.

Located next to the Houses of Parliament in the heart of London, Westminster Abbey is a must-see for any London visitor. With its oldest parts dating to the year 1050, the Abbey contains some of the most glorious medieval architecture in London. Because of its royal connections, it was spared King Henry VIII's general assault on monastic buildings during the Reformation.

The interior is a veritable museum of English history. Among many highlights are the medieval coronation throne; Poet's Corner with its memorials to William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, and other giants of literature; and the tombs of Queen Elizabeth I, "Bloody" Queen Mary, explorer David Livingstone and naturalist Charles Darwin.

According to tradition, a shrine was first founded here in 616 on a site then known as Thorney Island. It was said to have been miraculously consecrated after a fisherman on the River Thames saw a vision of Saint Peter. While the existence of this shrine is uncertain, the historic Abbey was built by Edward the Confessor between 1045-1050 and was consecrated on December 28, 1065. Its construction originated in Edward's failure to keep a vow to go on a pilgrimage; the Pope suggested that he redeem himself by building an Abbey.

The original Abbey, in the Romanesque style that is called "Norman" in England, was built to house Benedictine monks. It was rebuilt in the Gothic style between 1245-1517. The first phase of the rebuilding was organised by Henry III, in Gothic style, as a shrine to honor Edward the Confessor and as a suitably regal setting for Henry's own tomb, under the highest Gothic nave in England. The work was largely finished by the architect Henry Yevele in the reign of King Richard II. Henry VII added a Perpendicular style chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary in 1503 (known as the Henry VII Lady Chapel).

Although the Abbey was seized by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1534, and closed in 1540, becoming a cathedral until 1550, its royal connections saved it from the destruction wrought on most other English abbeys. The expression "robbing Peter to pay Paul" may arise from this period when money meant for the Abbey, which was dedicated to St. Peter, was diverted to the treasury of St. Paul's Cathedral. It suffered damage during the turbulent 1640s, when it was attacked by Puritan iconoclasts, but was again protected by its close ties to the state during the Commonwealth period. Oliver Cromwell was given an elaborate funeral there in 1658, only to be disinterred in January 1661 and posthumously hanged from a nearby gibbet. The Abbey was restored to the Benedictines under Queen Mary, but they were again ejected under Queen Elizabeth I in 1559. In 1579, Elizabeth re-established Westminster as a "royal peculiar" � a church responsible directly to the sovereign, rather than to a diocesan bishop � and made it the Collegiate Church of St. Peter, (i.e. a church with an attached chapter of canons, headed by a dean). The abbey's two western towers were built between 1722 and 1745 by Sir Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor, constructed from Portland stone to an early example of a Gothic Revival design. Further rebuilding and restoration occurred in the 19th century under Sir George Gilbert Scott.
Until the 19th century, Westminster was the third seat of learning in England, after Oxford and Cambridge. It was here that the first third of the King James Bible Old Testament and the last half of the New Testament were translated. The New English Bible was also put together here in the 20th century. Since the Christmas Day coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066, all English monarchs (except Lady Jane Grey, Edward V and Edward VIII, who did not have coronations) have been crowned in the Abbey. The Archbishop of Canterbury is the traditional cleric in the coronation ceremony. St. Edward's Chair, the throne on which British sovereigns are seated at the moment of coronation, is housed within the Abbey. Closer to our own time, in 1998 ten 20th-century Christian martyrs including Deitrich Bonhoeffer, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Oscar Romero were immortalized in stone statues over the Great West Door.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge has a fascinating history, which is explored in full in The Tower Bridge Exhibition. Here are a few interesting facts you may not have known:

1910 - the high-level walkways, which were designed so that the public could still cross the bridge when it was raised, were closed down due to lack of use.

1912 - during an emergency, Frank McClean had to fly between the bascules and the high-level walkways in his Short biplane, to avoid an accident.

1952 - a London bus driven by Albert Gunton had to leap from one bascule to the other when the bridge began to rise with the number 78 bus still on it.

1977 - Tower Bridge was painted red, white and blue to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee. (Before that, it was painted a chocolate brown colour).

1982 - Tower Bridge opened to the public for the first time since 1910, with a permanent exhibition inside called The Tower Bridge Experience.
